The Yorktown Community in North Central Philadelphia set a precedent for home ownership by Blacks in our city. Constructed in 1960, this is the only community where the first owners were Black.
These acquisitions came during a time when the real estate industry was just realizing the economic power of Blacks and other minorities. This 153-acre parcel stands today as proof of this power.
In 1961, these 650 homeowners united to form the Yorktown Community Organization. The organization's accomplishments include numerous youth activities and athletic programs and collective input towards final zoning ordinances and furnishings for buildings bordering the Yorktown area.
